The new barn can be rented out for family gatherings or community events. Very neat building!

Nice walk from JIgger Johnson, and the woman working there was very friendly and informative.

About midway along the Kancamagus Highway in the White Mountains of NH is this 1831 homestead, the only house preserved from an era of farming and sawmilling in the Passaconaway Valley. Our visit on July 7, 2016 was to a home essentially preserved in the condition it was in since built. A docent in period garb told the story of the home and its occupants and there is written material available to take away as well. Most interesting were the 24 1/2 inch wide old growth boards used in the flooring and the tale of Thomas Colbarth who left the house one day in 1891 saying he would be back "in a little while" and returned 42 years later after his wife had passed. She left a light in her window each night, expecting Thomas to return but he never did while she was alive. In the preserved home, an old pump organ stood in a corner, and when the docent invited me to play it, I did, as I had commented that I had played a similar instrument belonging to my grandfather. The music on the stand was "A Light in the Window" and so it was fun to relive the experience of a hundred years ago in that way. Entry is free but donations are accepted. A small cemetery is nearby and panels tell the story of the valley. It was a delightful informative historical visit along a scenic road in this beautiful part of a beautiful state.

And the clean bathrooms can't be overlooked ;o)

Special Notes:

This small homestead is worthy of a visit. It gives visitors a glimpse into what life was like in the 1830's. Along with the family home, there's a wonderful old family graveyard, a newly built post and beam barn with picnic tables, and a short and level interpretive hike through the adjacent woods. On the day we visited, there was a knowledgeable and friendly interpreter in period dress, which certainly made the stop all the more interesting!

A must stop when traveling the "Kanc" or Kancamagus Highway.
